Commissioned Portrait Pricing & Process
1/2 Length Figure
A half-figure portrait offers greater compositional potential, as more of the sitter's figure is included. Body language and positioning further communicate the subject’s personality, and the inclusion of one or both hands enhances character even more. This format also allows for meaningful props or background elements to enrich the narrative.
3/4 Length Figure
A popular format that provides an excellent opportunity to create a unique and compelling composition. With additional wall space, the pose itself becomes a significant compositional element. Props and more detailed background elements can be incorporated to enhance the story within the portrait.
Full Figure Oil Portrait
The most striking of all single-figure portrait formats, a full-length painting commands presence and serves as a focal point in any room. Traditionally used to depict people of nobility and stature, this format allows for a vast background that can further extend the composition’s grandeur and meaning.
Multi-Figure Oil Portrait
Size is based on the number of figures and compositional complexity.
Pricing available upon request.
A multi-figure portrait opens up endless possibilities for narrative and composition. Whether depicting an intimate moment between two subjects or a larger, more intricate grouping, this format allows for themes ranging from naturalistic to surreal and imaginative.
The Painting Process
What differentiates the Old Masters’ portraits from most contemporary realist works are two key factors. First, they employed a highly strategic approach that resulted in portraits appearing even more alive than reality itself. I have devoted years to mastering this exact mindset. Second, they applied colors in thin, translucent layers, a meticulous and time-consuming technique that enhances the natural luminescence of skin tones. Human skin is inherently translucent, and this method greatly enhances the illusion of depth and realism. I couple this classical technique with the impressionist pursuit of true color notes—subtle, nuanced shifts of hue—to further enrich the sense of life and presence within the painting.
When the painting nears completion, I encourage clients to visit my studio for a brief sitting. This allows me to make subtle adjustments to skin tones and gives you an opportunity to see the portrait in person. Clients may also choose to visit during different stages of the painting process, which many find to be a rewarding and immersive experience. Once finished, you may view the final portrait in my studio or, if preferred, receive a high-quality photograph for final approval. While a frame is not included in the painting’s cost, I am happy to assist in selecting an appropriate frame to best enhance the portrait.
To transform a portrait into a true work of art, every element—composition, color harmony, and design—must be considered with the utmost care. My dedication to these details elevates each piece to an unrivaled level, ensuring that you, and generations to come, will cherish your portrait.
A Successful Portrait Requires Thoughtful Planning
Proper planning is essential to the success of a portrait. I ensure that every necessary detail is established before ever picking up a brush. A hit-or-miss approach is not an option—every brushstroke is intentional.
Portraits can be created from live sittings, photo references, or a combination of both. Given the extensive time I devote to each painting, most clients prefer working from carefully selected photographs. However, the true success of a portrait does not come from merely copying a reference. Instead, it is achieved through a deep understanding of form, light, and the infinite manipulation of artistic elements to create the illusion of life on a two-dimensional surface. My extensive experience painting from life allows me to bring an unparalleled depth and vibrancy to my work, capturing not just a likeness, but the very essence of my subjects.
Keep in mind that before I start the process of doing a portrait we must agree to terms with a contract. After the contract I will need the commitment of a down payment of half the cost.
